Videoclip for introductions and conclusions
The Simpsons: Season 2, episode 2
Toward the end of this episode, Homer gives a speech to the board of the power plant. Although the audience is distracted by his lack of hair, I ask students to focus on the introduction and conclusion. There are several follow-up questions:
- Did Homer do all parts of the introduction? Which were missing?
- How would the missing parts have helped his speech?
- Did he do all parts of the conclusion?
- What did he need to do to make the conclusion better?
This clip is a nice example for this topic because some parts of the speech (like attention-getter) are very clear and the missing parts (like a credibility statement) have a clear effect on the outcome of his speech.
