Videoclip for introductions and conclusions

Videoclip for introductions and conclusions

The Simpsons: Season 2, episode 2

Toward the end of this episode, Homer gives a speech to the board of the power plant. Although the audience is distracted by his lack of hair, I ask students to focus on the introduction and conclusion. There are several follow-up questions:

  • Did Homer do all parts of the introduction? Which were missing?
  • How would the missing parts have helped his speech?
  • Did he do all parts of the conclusion?
  • What did he need to do to make the conclusion better?

This clip is a nice example for this topic because some parts of the speech (like attention-getter) are very clear and the missing parts (like a credibility statement) have a clear effect on the outcome of his speech.

About teachingpublicspeaking

I believe public speaking can go from most dreaded class to favorite class. I'm a former public speaking college instructor who spent years seeking out activities, assignments and examples to make the class interactive as well as educational -- they are collected here. I welcome suggestions for additions.
