Video for listening (or interpretive competence)

Link to episode description

Simpsons: Season 6, episode 13

This episode recounts the birth of Maggie. Midway through is a clip where Homer is enjoying his new job at a bowling alley. He has not yet found out that Marge is pregnant although everyone else in town already knows. When several people congratulate Homer on Marge’s pregnancy, he interprets their comments to be about his new job — sometimes absurdly.

It is a nice clip to show biased listening and a failure of interpretive competence with regard to salience.

About teachingpublicspeaking

I believe public speaking can go from most dreaded class to favorite class. I'm a former public speaking college instructor who spent years seeking out activities, assignments and examples to make the class interactive as well as educational -- they are collected here. I welcome suggestions for additions.
