Written assignment for day one

This is a brief writing assignment that can be done early in the semester to get students thinking about the advantages of a public speaking class to their own plans.

Many universities now require communication or public speaking classes. At the same time, many professional job listings include “communication skills” in their description for new employees. Consider the role of communication in your career plans. What is your intended or dream career? What kind of communication gets done regularly in this career? How does this change as someone gets promoted? How do you think a course like this could help you prepare for the kinds of communication done in your intended or dream career? Aside from job goals, how could improved communication skills help in your academic career? What, then, would you say that you most hope to take out of this course?

I set these brief writing assignments up so students got to choose which ones they wanted to do. This one was always very popular, perhaps because it was due right after the first day of class…

About teachingpublicspeaking

I believe public speaking can go from most dreaded class to favorite class. I'm a former public speaking college instructor who spent years seeking out activities, assignments and examples to make the class interactive as well as educational -- they are collected here. I welcome suggestions for additions.

What do you think?
