Web resources for interpersonal communication

The last textbook that I used in class had very little about interpersonal communication and I had an interpersonal unit planned. I found some free materials online to supplement the students’ reading assignments:

Survey of Communication Study Wikibook

This online book has a nice overview of several topics and I like their use of examples. I used chapter 2 on verbal communication and chapter 3 on nonverbal communication. Note that there is potentially offensive language in some of the chapters.

Gender Communication

I had a difficult time finding good information available for gender communication online but this article is a nice overview of Deborah Tannen’s work and includes several good examples.

When giving online readings as assignments, I got into the habit of copying the material into a document to link to my web site (with proper credit and a link, of course). This was because there were times that material was removed from online midway through the semester and I would have to scramble to replace it. I checked the links to the original document before each new semester and stopped using any material that had been removed. Putting the reading into a document also allows you to shorten the reading or take out any inappropriate language or examples.

Do you know any other good online resources for teaching interpersonal communication? Leave a comment and I’ll add it to the list.

About teachingpublicspeaking

I believe public speaking can go from most dreaded class to favorite class. I'm a former public speaking college instructor who spent years seeking out activities, assignments and examples to make the class interactive as well as educational -- they are collected here. I welcome suggestions for additions.
